Puce (the Owl) or formerly know as “Pulkvedim Neviens Neraksta” which in English means “Nobody Writes to the Colonel” has been the only bastion of alternative music for a bohemian crowd desperate to avoid pop and techno music since the mid 90s.
More: Puce
Pulkvedis (or Colonel) as locals still call it short, is one of the most unusual and positive clubs of Riga in point of music and design. It also is very foreigners friendly, so don’t be surprised if suddenly official language becomes English on Friday night.
Its dark, industrial-style hip interior as the retro cellar bar with pink shag carpeting on the wall was designed by one of the most famous Latvian architects using single accents such as unpainted wood, train seats, simple lampshades in early 90ies and that pretty much how it remained until today. Such atmosphere would make both student and bohemian crowd feeling very cosy ,and of course nice and friendly bar staff makes this atmosphere even more pleasant.
Sometimes they do live music performances here, as well as invite foreign artists and DJs to play live music sets. If not, the nights are mostly divided among local resident deejays who play practically all kinds of light music from hip hop to jazzy beats, from jazz to house, from disco to electro and breakbeat, from reggae to funk.
