Named after Coco Chanel’s real name Gabrielle Bonheur, “Bonēra” (Latvian way of saying a French word “bonheur”, pronounced as: bon-err, meaning “happiness”), is a cosy cafe in the town centre that was opened not that long ago, but has already become a popular place.
The interior was created by a reputable Latvian architect and designer Zane Tetere and vintage Chanel style inspired by 40s Paris is visible in each interior element – from the textures on the walls, old black and white tweed covered furniture to Coco Chanel photos. Black and white is the main colour palette of “Bonēra” and is seen across the cafe interior. A 150-year-old piano that you’ll spot in the front room corner also looks cool. Not sure that you can play it though, but it definitely adds a gentle touch and atmosphere to the room.
The food in the menu is very authentic, healthy and natural. Have a try of one of their natural juices: cranberry, apple, plum and blueberry, all brought from Latvian villages and of course their famous home-baked cakes. We particularly loved the almond cake. Really delicious! They also do the lunches for very affordable prices.
“Bonera” is also a vintage store, so if you are in a mood to look for some vintage clothing and accessories from the 40s – 70s decades then this is a right spot for you. You can actually find quite well-known brands like Pierre Cardin, Oscar de la Renta and Ralph Lauren in the collection. The store owners say that every item has been thoroughly investigated and has its own story. We were told that once there was a bank’s check 10,000 dollars worth found in the old 70s Ralph Lauren handbag.
Following its theme of a creative and trendy spot, every now and then “Bonēra” hosts various cultural events like lectures, poetry evenings, concerts and film nights. On Thursdays local DJs and on Fridays musicians come to play their live sets (tickets for concerts costing around 3Ls), but make sure you book a table in advance for that. Summer open terrace is also available over warm days.
