Rozengrals Restaurant does a fantastic job of recreating a medieval banquet hall and atmosphere. The waiters are wearing ridiculous outfits befitting a character in a Monty Python movie. The menu has little descriptions of which medieval princes and kings served which dishes to their esteemed guests and subjects. And yet, perhaps because the atmosphere in Riga is just so congenial and cool, the whole thing actually works.
According to their website, the space itself is mentioned in manuscripts dating back to the 12th century, and every detail, including the chains with which you pull open the bathroom doors, reflect the city’s historicism and charm. The food, despite the aforementioned blurbs, does not all come on a giant drumstick or in a cauldron of black, bubbly goo. It is fresh and flavorful, and considering the obvious tourist angle, is not wildly overpriced.
Rozengrals is a lot like that one drama kid in your class – you hate all her friends and that weird velvet corset, but once you get to know her, you find out she’s pretty cool and knows more about sex then your friend’s older brother.
